Altaf began his legal career with a leading US law firm in London before completing pupillage at Gatehouse Chambers. He subsequently worked at Linklaters and held senior legal positions with Royal Bank of Scotland, Worldpay and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, where he served as Deputy General Counsel.

Following a decade as a partner in the Karachi office of one of Pakistan’s leading law firms, Altaf led the expansion of HWP by establishing its London office, strengthening the firm’s international capability and cross-border offering.

Notable Experience

Throughout his career, Altaf has advised on a number of landmark international transactions, including:

  • Advising a Chinese sovereign fund on its investment in a Pakistani hydropower project, including the first major offshore financing of its kind.
  • Leading the Pakistan aspects of KKR’s multi-billion acquisition involving the AMUL group.
  • Playing a key role in the US$1.65 billion financing of the WAPDA Dasu Dam project.
  • Acting as standing local counsel to ISDA on Pakistani derivatives and netting law.

These matters demonstrate his experience advising on high-value transactions involving governments, international investors, financial institutions and multinational corporations.
